The Person
I was born in Hartford, Connecticut and raised in upstate New York. I spent most of my childhood riding my bike, playing in snow drifts and making things out of fabric and yarn. I was a decent enough piano player to get into college as a music major, but not dedicated enough to remain there for more than a year. After vascillating between the arts and the sciences I finally earned a bachelor's degree in physics. Why? Because I wanted to be a science writer, but more on that later. Now I live in a lovely hamlet outside Boston, MA and I am still riding my bike, playing in snow drifts whenever possible, and making things out of fabric and yarn.
The Professional
So, physics. That B.A landed me my first job, at Science News magazine. As assistant to the editor I had the opportunity to do many things, including writing and designing some in-house ads. While the writing was less than satisfying, I loved designing and specing type and colors. I also found the printing process fascinating, and thus veered off the journalism career path and into graphics and production. I spent the next few years working in a production capacity with some opportunity to do design, but longed to be a full-fledged designer. Finally I enrolled in the graphic design program at the Massachusetts College of Art, and claimed for myself a design certificate and a nice portfolio.
After freelancing for a few years, it became clear that electronic media was far surpassing print and I had better get up to speed if I didn't want to get squashed. Again I returned to school to learn everything I could about designing for the web. This time I collected a web design certificate and built an online portfolio that you can see here.
Why you should hire me
1. I've been around the block. Several times, in fact. I have the life experience and perspective that comes from dealing with lots of different people and different situations. I've screwed things up, and have already learned from my screw ups, so I won't be practicing on you.
2. I know how to get things done. When freelancing, every minute counts. I am often working within a fixed budget, so it is imperative to plan and implement as efficiently as possible. I have learned how to manage my time efficiently, and also balance several projects at a time. I respect the deadline.
3. I don't know everything. I've garnered a lot of knowledge over time, but I continue to learn. Every single day. If there's something that has escaped my inquiring mind and is essential to the task at hand I will research it until it is mine.
4. I'm fun to work with. At least that's what people have said. I take serious things seriously and work like a draft horse. But I like to laugh, too. At appropriate times. Don't worry.
